Sterling Emma C Berry Builder's Log (David Hill)

Logbook of David Hill's building progress on the Sterling Emma C Berry (B21M)

Date Building notes
2/1/2000 Begin breaking out keel and frame parts, clean up and trace parts onto cardstock if needed for replacement (or later reproduction). Do this for ALL parts as they are gotten out of die cut sheets.
2/5/2000 Dry fit frames (bulkheads) together and trace onto paper. Photocopy and compare mirror images to check for skew. Mark corrections and lay up again, "splitting the difference" between images. Glue up bulkheads.
2/10 Trace out finished bulkhead templates onto cardstock. Flip over and trace mirror image to show any remaining inconsistancies.
2/12 Glue up keel parts into completed keel/backbone.
2/14 Trim sternpost angle to "correct" angle, gotten from lines plan. Glue sternpost reinforcement in place and cut out for sternpost tube
2/16 Scarf sheers and bulwarks (from 2 pieces each). Dry fit frames on keel, fit and insert platforms, dry fit sheers
2/17 Map position of auxiliary power drive shaft (from rear of lower platform to center of sternpost/rudder.) Glue rudder halves together.
2/18 To reinforce deadwood for drive shaft, laminate 1/64" ply onto aft portion of keel, reinforce "inside hull" with additional ply of 1/8" balsa, grain vertical.. Cut out balsa core for shaft. This allows for 3/16" shaft.
2/19 Reconsider building keel up to allow for 1/4" shaft. Consider lubrication fittings: through hull or bent tube for access from inside cockpit? Considering replacing balsa of exposed part of keel with a more durable wood.
3/5 Reconfigured the website using "frames", with table of contents down left side. Tested making mast hoops, successfully with poplar shavings, not so successfully with cedar or aspen shavings. Hardwood works better. Added "mast hoops" tip.
