Windjam Records is respected for its roster of high caliber musicians and songwriters - artists who intelligently and passionately portray the grittier realities that define our current lives. Boston has a long history of intellectual, cultural and progressive personality. The bands of the 70's and 80's did much to shape the national scene. The label began with veterans of this tradition. These bands who form the foundation of the label were all signed to major label deals in the 70's and 80's. They share the expertise and experience that enables Windjam to turn out top quality recordings.

Asa Brebner was a founding member of Jonathan Richman and The Modern Lovers and Robin Lane & The Chartbusters. Peter C. Johnson emerged from the Cambridge-Boston crucible, along with friends like Chris Smither, Bonnie Raitt and Bill Morrissey. Rick Berlin helped define the pop-rock sound of Boston and New York with his bands Orchestra Luna and the Berlin Airlift. Jim Fitting began a hot career as a master of rock harmonica with the new wave band the Sex Execs and the innovative Treat Her Right. He performed with Bonnie Raitt and the British pop group The The. Paddy Keenan was a founding key member of the influential Bothy Band and his vast recording experience began by working with producers Donal Lunny and P.J. Curtis. The Windjam roster is expanding. It includes some of the hottest new artists. Windjam is dedicated to producing honest, cutting-edge music.

Windjam Records Business Philosophy

In our effort to build financial security for Windjam's artists, we are developing ways to create an audience and to share their music with people who choose to support them as professionals on the independent label.

Artists each have a web page to describe their experience and history in music. This page also contains CD information, music samples as well as reviews. A free or bargain priced download may be available. Today's prompt shipping of the traditional "pre-packaged product" is known for Windjam's artistic and pleasing packaging. Because we work as an artists' cooperative, we are able to achieve exceptional recording results at substantially lower costs than major labels. We verify this by how happy the artists are with their recordings and by the critical acclaim of fans and reviewers alike.

Promotion is the essential and most costly aspect of the music business. We struggle with the reluctance of consumers and patrons of the arts to donate their hard-earned money to directly support independent artists rather than be bombarded by the obscene excesses of the pop-culture's single minded obsessions.
